Dallas Cowboys Trade Rumors: Jerry Jones Says Team Has ‘Serious’ Financial Room for a Deal

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys may have positioned themselves to make another significant move before the NFL trade deadline.

Dallas recently created more than $19 million in additional salary-cap space by restructuring the contracts of defensive tackle Kenny Clark, cornerback DaRon Bland and tight end Jake Ferguson. The move immediately raised questions about whether the Cowboys were preparing to pursue another player on the trade market.

According to Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones, that possibility is very much on the table.

Appearing on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, Jones explained that the Cowboys’ latest salary-cap maneuver gives the franchise considerable financial flexibility if the right trade opportunity becomes available.

“That does show that we have really viable, serious room financially to make a trade if we wanted to right now,” Jones said.

The comments are significant for the Dallas Cowboys, who have already shown a willingness to use draft capital to address the roster during the 2026 season.

Dallas Cowboys Have Significant Salary-Cap Flexibility

NFL Players Association figures currently show the Dallas Cowboys with approximately $33.6 million in available salary-cap space.

If Dallas ultimately decides not to use that money this season, the remaining space can be carried over into the 2027 salary cap. However, Jones’ latest comments suggest the Cowboys are keeping their options open as they evaluate potential trades.

Dallas entered training camp with Jones making it clear that he was willing to pursue a substantial trade if it could make the Cowboys a better team in 2026.

That willingness could become increasingly important as the season progresses and teams around the NFL begin determining whether they are buyers or sellers ahead of the trade deadline.

Cowboys Could Target Defensive Help

If the Cowboys make another trade, Jones indicated that the defense would be the most likely area of focus.

Dallas already addressed the offensive line last week by acquiring offensive tackle Broderick Jones from the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Cowboys received Jones and a fourth-round pick in exchange for third- and sixth-round selections.

With several other positions viewed favorably by Jones, defensive depth appears to be the logical area for Dallas to explore.

Jones expressed confidence in the Cowboys’ running back group and quarterback depth while also pointing to the team’s talent at tight end and wide receiver.

Dallas has a premier receiving duo in CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, giving the Cowboys another reason to potentially concentrate their trade efforts on defense.

“So when you look at all of that, you probably could see more than likely depth on defense,” Jones said. “But defense would be the place.”

That makes Dallas Cowboys trade rumors involving defensive players particularly worth watching as the NFL trade deadline approaches.

Jerry Jones Open to Using Future Draft Picks

One of the biggest questions surrounding any potential Cowboys trade is how much draft capital Dallas would be willing to surrender.

The Cowboys currently hold picks in the first, second, fourth and sixth rounds of the 2027 NFL Draft based on their previous transactions. Dallas also is not currently projected to receive compensatory draft selections for free agents who departed during the offseason.

Jones acknowledged that draft picks remain extremely valuable to the Cowboys, but he also emphasized that the immediate goal is building the strongest possible roster for the current season.

While Dallas would prefer to maintain its draft capital, Jones did not rule out using future picks to acquire an impact player.

“You want all the picks you can get, but this time of the year what you’re interested in is what you’ve done with the picks that you’ve used and what you might be able to do if you could add to bringing talent on the roster,” Jones said.

The Cowboys have already demonstrated that they are willing to move draft selections when they believe an addition can improve the team.

Cowboys Trade Talks Are Continuing

Jones indicated that the Cowboys remain involved in general trade discussions, although there is no specific deal currently considered imminent.

That distinction is important for Dallas fans. The Cowboys have the financial resources to make a move, but having salary-cap space does not necessarily mean a major trade is about to happen.

Instead, Dallas appears to be keeping its options open while monitoring potential opportunities around the league.

The Cowboys’ financial flexibility could become especially valuable if a defensive player becomes available who fits the team’s roster needs and can make an immediate impact.

When Is the NFL Trade Deadline?

The 2026 NFL trade deadline is Nov. 10, giving the Dallas Cowboys additional time to evaluate their roster and potential trade targets.

For now, the Cowboys have both the salary-cap space and draft-pick flexibility to pursue another deal if Jones and the front office believe the right player is available.

The biggest question is no longer whether Dallas can make a trade.

It’s whether the Cowboys find a defensive player worth spending their financial resources and future draft capital to acquire.

With Jerry Jones openly acknowledging that Dallas has “serious” financial room to make a deal, Cowboys trade rumors are likely to remain a major storyline in Texas as the NFL trade deadline approaches.
