Westlake Holds Off Inglewood in Thrilling 33-26 Season-Opening Victory

AUSTIN, Texas — The Westlake Chaparrals opened the 2026 high school football season
with a statement victory Friday night, outlasting the Inglewood Sentinels 33-26 in a back-
and-forth thriller at Chaparral Stadium.
In a matchup that featured two talented programs from two of the nation’s most football-
rich states, Westlake delivered when the game mattered most. The Chaparrals built momentum throughout the night, but Inglewood refused to go away, keeping the outcome in doubt until the final moments.
The season opener had all the ingredients of an early-season classic: explosive plays,
momentum swings and a fourth-quarter finish that kept the home crowd on edge.
Westlake entered the game looking to establish itself immediately in 2026, and the
Chaparrals did just that. Facing a dangerous Inglewood team that traveled from California
to Austin, Westlake matched the Sentinels’ athleticism and physicality while making
enough plays to protect its home field.
The Chaparrals’ offense consistently found ways to move the football and put points on the
board, finishing with 33 points against a talented opponent. But every time Westlake
appeared ready to gain separation, Inglewood answered.
The Sentinels kept the pressure on throughout the second half, turning what could have
become a comfortable Westlake victory into a tense battle. With the score tightening late,
every possession became critical.
Ultimately, the Chaparrals made the plays necessary to close the door.
Westlake’s defense came through in the decisive moments, preventing Inglewood from
completing a late comeback and preserving the seven-point victory. When the final whistle
sounded, the Chaparrals had survived their first major test of the season with a 33-26 win.
For Westlake, the victory provided an ideal beginning to the 2026 campaign. Season
openers can often reveal weaknesses and areas for improvement, but Friday night’s
matchup also showed the Chaparrals’ ability to handle adversity.
Inglewood made sure Westlake had to earn every bit of the victory.
The Sentinels’ ability to battle back demonstrated why they were a formidable opponent,
but the Chaparrals showed the composure needed to withstand the pressure. In front of
their home fans at Chaparral Stadium, Westlake refused to let the season opener slip
away.
The win gives the Chaparrals an early boost as they turn their attention toward the rest of
their schedule. There will undoubtedly be areas to clean up after allowing 26 points and
facing a competitive opponent for four quarters, but Westlake now has a victory over a
quality out-of-state program to build upon.
As for Inglewood, the loss was a disappointing finish to a hard-fought effort, but the
Sentinels proved they could go toe-to-toe with one of Texas’ premier programs.
For Westlake, however, Friday night belonged to the Chaparrals.
The 2026 season is only one game old, but after surviving a thrilling 33-26 battle with
Inglewood, Westlake has already shown it can win when the pressure is at its highest.
