Texas Cornerback Dhillon McGee Takes His Talents to Penn State

Desoto, Texas — The Big Ten continues to make its presence felt in the Lone Star State,
and the latest example is Class of 2027 defensive back Dhillon McGee.
The former Red Oak High School standout, who recently transferred to Desoto High
School for his senior year, has committed to the Penn State Nittany Lions. McGee, a 6-
foot, 175-pound cornerback, announced his commitment in June and is currently
preparing for his senior season in one of the nation’s deepest high school football talent
pools.

For Penn State, the commitment represents more than simply adding another defensive
back. Landing a player from Texas is significant in an increasingly national recruiting
landscape, particularly as Big Ten programs continue to compete with SEC, Big 12 and
in-state powers for elite prospects.

McGee’s decision sends him nearly 1,500 miles from Desoto to State College, but the
opportunity to play in one of college football’s premier conferences proved difficult to pass up.

Another High Caliber Recruit Leaving Texas

Texas high school football has long been one of the most productive recruiting pipelines
in the country, and the 2027 class is loaded with blue-chip talent. More than 50 players
in the state have earned four- or five-star recognition, according to a June report
published by Yahoo Sports, on the state’s top recruits.

McGee, who recently visited the University of Texas before making his commitment to
Penn State, is now part of a growing group of Texas prospects choosing to leave the
Lone Star State for opportunities outside the state’s traditional college football powers.
At Desoto, the cornerback has the size and athletic profile that college programs covet
at the position. Listed at 6-foot and 175 pounds, McGee brings length to the secondary
and has positioned himself as one of the notable defensive backs in the Texas Class of
2027.

What McGee Brings to Penn State

The modern Big Ten has become a conference built around national recruiting. With the
implementation of NIL, programs are no longer limiting themselves to regional talent,
and schools such as Penn State regularly compete for prospects across the country.

McGee gives the Nittany Lions another athletic defensive back with time remaining
before National Signing Day. Because he is a 2027 prospect, his final high school season
will provide an opportunity to continue developing before he arrives on campus.

His commitment also comes during a period in which the Big Ten is attracting some of
the nation’s top young talent. Eight of the nation’s 32 five-star prospects in the 2027
cycle were committed to Big Ten programs as of July, highlighting the conference’s
growing recruiting strength.

The Road Ahead

Of course, recruiting commitments are not signatures. McGee still has his senior season
at Desoto ahead of him, and the recruiting process can change quickly before the Class
of 2027 officially signs.

For now, however, Penn State has secured a verbal pledge from the Texas defensive
back, while McGee has a chance to finish his high school career before beginning the
next chapter in State College.

For a player from north Texas, the journey from Texas high school football to Big Ten
Saturdays is officially taking shape.
